Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of questions we frequently receive.  If you have a different question or would like additional information/help, please submit your request on our Contact Us page.

Why should I take the Ruehlin Associates seminar?

The Ruehlin Associates seminar is designed to meet the level of need . . . that is, it focuses on what a particular rank needs to be successful in a job hunt. While the basic information contained in all our seminars is the same, the presentation of the material varies greatly depending on the audience. In addition, our trainers all have extensive experience in the corporate world, have MBA's, and have senior military service backgrounds. They have all transitioned from a successful career in the service to a successful career in the private sector prior to coming to work for Ruehlin Associates.

How do I get in to one of your seminars?

Ruehlin Associates does not control quotas. We recommend contacting your command's Chief Of Staff or training officer and ask for a quota. If your command is not hosting a seminar, you may try contacting a local Type Commander Headquarters.

Where can I find a list or schedule of upcoming seminars?

We regret that due to our clients' wishes (hosting commands), we do not promulgate a seminar list or seminar schedule.

How much does a seminar cost?

The fee depends on where the seminar is held. For example, the cost of conducting a seminar in Naples, Italy will be more than in Norfolk or San Diego . . . where we have local consultants, and, therefore, no travel expenses. Contact John Ruehlin for pricing estimates (use "Contact Us" page or call +1 (619) 435-2220).

Who pays for the seminar?

In most cases, the seminar is paid for by the sponsoring activity. There have been cases where a group of individuals collectively sponsored the seminar, but for the most part, a government activity sponsors the service.

Do I still have to take the TAP class if I attend your seminar?

Yes, the TAP class will discuss your retirement and VA benefits; we do not cover these topics in our seminar. The Ruehlin Associates seminar is strictly about how to transition to a new career.

What happens to me after the seminar?

We provide follow-on assistance for 60 days. That includes resume review and answering questions that you may have about your transition. The follow-on support is provided by the trainer who conducted your seminar. When you call for assistance you should be prepared to tell the trainer where and when you took the seminar. And, please review what the book has to say about your question before you make the call to us. Often times your question will be answered by reading the pertinent chapter in the book.

Coordinating a Ruehlin Associates Seminar

One of the most frequent questions asked by people assigned to coordinate and manage one of our career transition seminars is, “Where do I begin, and what actions do I have to take?” Following is a step-by-step sequence of the actions required.

  1. Determine if there is a need for the seminar(s). Get command approval.
  2. Determine a good time frame to hold the seminar. Contact Mr. Nelson Hendricks to discuss scheduling availability and reserve a date: +1 (619) 787-9226; nelson.coo.ruehlin@gmail.com.
  3. Call Mr. John Ruehlin about the seminar fee +1 (619) 435-2220.
  4. Reserve a venue for the seminar. If possible, reserve a location away from the command’s office complex. Tables should be arranged in a ”horseshoe” with seating around the outside of the horseshoe. Refreshments, consisting of at least coffee, tea and soft drinks should be provided, if possible.  COVID Update: If the seminar will be conducted remotely or hybrid, ensure adequate Wi-Fi is available for the remote attendees and at the presentation site (for hybrid).
  5. Ensure funds are obligated for the seminar and secure a contract. Fax or email a copy of the contract to Ruehlin Associates: Fax +1 (619) 435-2220; careers@ruehlinassociates.com.
  6. Send a message announcing the seminar, the location, dates/start time, where and how to sign up, where to pick up homework packages, and the activity’s point of contact. Note: the seminar usually begins on a Monday at 0800 and ends on the following Wednesday afternoon. The following two days (Thursday and Friday) are used to conduct one-on-one sessions with each attendee. Those meeting times will be scheduled at the seminar.
  7. Provide Mr. Nelson Hendricks with your shipping address. Materials will be shipped to you via UPS several weeks prior to the seminar. The shipment will contain homework packages for the attendees to complete prior to the seminar. The shipment will also include course books and instructor material. Please note: the instructor materials should be secured and given to the instructor on the first morning of the seminar.

Other Planning Considerations

Class size and make-up

The class size is limited to 14 active duty participants and their spouses/partners. Therefore, you could possibly have 28 people attending. Normally, about 5-6 spouses attend. The seminar is usually provided to senior officers (O5/O6), enlisted personnel (E8/E9), and warrant officer equivalent who have 20-30+ years on active duty. There may be exceptions if the command so desires, but the goal is to make the group as homogeneous as possible. Normally, senior officer and senior enlisted personnel attend separate seminars.

Attire

Dress for the seminar is coat and tie (suit preferred) for the men and business dress/suit for the women. It is not necessary to rush out and buy new clothes . . . what people have will be fine.

Instructor

The seminar instructor will contact the seminar coordinator about four weeks prior to the seminar. The instructor will confirm the above arrangements and answer any questions you may have.
